Visszaemlékezések a vasfüggöny időszakára A Vasfüggöny szót a mindennapokban azonosították a második világháborút követően a kapitalista és a szocialista világrendszert elválasztó műszaki berendezéssel. A 356 kilométer hosszú osztrák-magyar határon sok-sok település került a rendszer mögé. Az első műszaki zárat – kétsoros drót, közte taposóaknák – 1949-ben kezdték el telepíteni, s 1955 júniusában fejezték be. A felrobbanó aknák 25-30 méteres körzetben halálosak voltak. Teklits Joe New Yorkból 1996 nyarán, amikor a település hazahívta a világban szétszóródott péterfaiakat így emlékezett vissza erre az időszakra: „Én 1955-ben 14 éves koromban mentem el Péterfáról. Akkor nagyon komplikált volt itt a helyzet. A családunkat kuláknak nyilvánították. Ezért nekem az általános iskola befejezését követően nem volt lehetőségem se gimnáziumba, se ipari iskolába mennem. Nem volt mentség: vagy parasztgyerek maradsz, vagy elmehetsz az erdőbe mókusnak. Amihez a legjobban értettünk, az a Vasfüggöny volt. Elmondhatom, hogy a határt mi, péterfai gyerekek jobban ismertük, mint maguk a katonák. Jobban tudtuk náluk, hogy hol vannak a jelzőrakéták, s hol vannak a taposóaknák. Akkor még tele volt az egész határ aknával. Sőt, az egyik szórakozásunk épp az volt, hogy kimentünk a Vasfüggönyhöz, felszedtük a földbe letelepített aknákat, szétszedtük őket, a darabjait beletettük a nadrágzsebünkbe, vagy a gatyánkba, s úgy mentünk haza. Persze ez nagyon veszélyes volt. Hihetetlen csoda, hogy egyikünkkel sem történt semmi baj.” Harangozó István a távoli Ausztráliából tért haza együtt ünnepelni az óhazaiakkal és a külföldre szakadt sorstársaival. „Én a háború után úgy éreztem, hogy itt hamarosan nagy változások lesznek, sok jó nem teremhet nekünk. Még Feri öcsémnek elintéztem, hogy a kőszegi gimnáziumba kerüljön, majd elhatároztam, hogy Bécsbe megyek tanulni. Még 1947-ben fennállt a „kettős birtokosok intézménye”, s mivel akkor még épp nem aknásították el a határt, különösebb nehézség nélkül, egy nagy hátizsákkal a hátamon átsétáltam a túloldalra Eberauba (Monyorókerék). Ott találkoztam egy ismerősömmel, majd vonattal Bécsbe utaztunk. Ott nagyon helyes emberekkel sikerült kapcsolatba kerülnöm, akiknek elmondtam, hogy én szeretnék tanulni. A házigazdám azt mondta, hogy itt van a közelben egy főiskola. Elmentünk oda, ahol mindjárt találkoztam egy magyarral, aki egyből pártfogásába vett. Mondta a házigazdámnak, hogy semmi baj, én most már utánanézek a Stephannak – aztán a Pistiből és Istvánból végül Steve lettem Ausztráliában -, menjen nyugodtan haza. Beiratkoztam a főiskolára, majd hazajöttem, fölpakoltam, mert rájöttem arra, hogy Bécsben 5 cigarettával meg tudok élni a háború után, olyan értéket képviselt akkor a dohány… Ausztrália volt az első hely, amely befogadta a szövetséges hatalmak ellen háborúzott országok menekültjeit, merthogy kellett nekik a munkaerő. Először a balti államokból fogadtak be embereket, majd Lengyelországból, s mikor ők már elfogytak, befogadták a magyarokat is. Akkor Ausztráliában alig volt órás. A bátyám orosz fogságban volt, ott tanulta meg, hogyan lehet műszer nélkül órákat javítani, így elhatározta, hogy kimegy Ausztráliába. Állandóan írta nekem Bécsbe, hogy gyere te is, gyere hozzám, itt a legjobb, meglátod. Mások meg Amerikába hívtak, mert ott is bőven voltak péterfaiak. Én aztán a Vince bátyám mellett döntöttem. Először fatelepen dolgoztam, majd elmentem egy vidéki városba, ahol egy nagy menekült tábor volt, és ott volt már a bátyám órásként. Ahogy letelt neki az első kinti két év, kinyitotta az órásüzletét. Emlékszem még rá, hogy prospektus-féléket csináltunk, s bedobáltuk a postaládákba. Másnap csak úgy jött a nép, hozta az öreg órákat, hogy javítsák meg. Mert senki nem akarta megjavítani őket, és ő volt a környéken az egyetlen jó órás… Hát kint két fiúra csak egy magyar lány esett. Ismertünk ausztrál lányokat, de ők valahogy nem tetszettek. Érdekes, nekem Ausztriában is lett volna alkalmam megnősülni, de akkor még nem éreztem azt, hogy kész vagyok erre. Ugyanez volt Ausztráliában is. Aztán jött a forradalom 1956-ban, és akkor hála Istennek, jöttek a fiatal magyar lányok. És ott, a magyar templomban megismerkedtem egy helyes kislánnyal: Akkor azt mondtam: ő tetszik nekem. Azóta is a feleségem.” Hirschl József volt az, aki polgármesterként 1996-ban hazahívta a világ több kontinensén élő közel félezer szentpéterfait. Ő így emlékezett vissza a Vasfüggöny korszakára és a disszidálásokra. „Ha jól emlékszem, akkor a fiatalok már a 60-as évek közepétől elkezdtek disszidálni. 65-ben azt hiszem ketten vagy hárman, 1966-ban már többen, 1967-ben már két csoport is, s aztán ez így ment tovább minden évben. Minden ilyen disszidálás után nagy felhajtás volt, egyből lezárták a határt, s kezdődött a kivizsgálás. Akár 3-4 napig, de volt olyan, hogy egy hétig is itt ténykedtek. Jött két teherkocsi, tele katonákkal, mozgósítás, erősítés, lábnyomvizsgálatok, kihallgatások… Ha az ember összeszámolja, ez milliókba kerülhetett. Az, hogy két jegyzőkönyvet meg tudjanak írni és a végén megállapítsák: igen, ez az esemény valóban megtörtént. A műszaki zárral – ha jól emlékszem – 1968-69-ben értek ide Péterfa alá. De a disszidálások ekkor is tovább folytatódtak, mert a falu a rendszeren belül esett. A bomba 1980-ban robbant, amikor 4 fiatal srác csoportosan disszidált. Ekkor aztán gyors és határozott döntés született. A műszaki zárat le kell vinni Szentpéterfa alá, hogy ezzel megakadályozhassák a további tiltott határátlépéseket. Tudomásom szerint az akkori árakon ez 10-12 millió forintba került. Ennyi pénzből Szentpéterfát már 1980-ban mindenféle téren városi szintre lehetett volna emelni… Talán az akkori magyar vezetés, vagy itt a megyei vezetés is azt hitte, hogy ezek a falvak annyira elzártak, hogy a Vasfüggöny miatt egyáltalán semmilyen információjuk nincs a nyugati világból. De igen nagyot tévedtek. A kiment falubelieknek a hazalátogatása 1962 után kezdett megindulni… Ezért olyan információkkal rendelkeztünk a határ másik oldaláról, hogy azt hiszem, ez nagyon meghatározta az itt élő emberek életfelfogását. A gettó megtisztítása után 1944. november 28-án 15 000 munkaszolgálatost szállítottak Kőszegre a budapesti Josefstadt pályaudvarról. Nagyon kevesen élték túl a gettó és a munkaszolgálat sorspróbáit. A többség mártírhalált szenvedett a rendkívüli fizikai megterhelés és az őrök emberellenes magatartása miatt. Eine tragische Episode in der modernen Geschichte der Stadt Kőszeg ist die Einrichtung des Ghettos und das Schicksal der Zwangsarbeiter. Am 4. Juli 1944 wurden die Juden von Kőszeg zusammen mit den anderen Bewohnern des Ghettos in Szombathely nach Auschwitz deportiert. Am 28. November 1944, nach der Räumung des Ghettos, wurden 15.000 Zwangsarbeiter vom Bahnhof Josefstadt in Budapest nach Kőszeg transportiert. Nur sehr wenige überlebten die Torturen des Ghettos und der Zwangsarbeitslagers. Die meisten erlitten den Märtyrertod aufgrund der extremen körperlichen Belastung und des unmenschlichen Verhaltens der Wachen. Ezekből megtudhatjuk, hogy a foglyok kemény fizikai munkát végeztek (fakitermelés, árokásás, tankcsapdák létesítése), kora reggeltől késő estig dolgoztak, minimális élelmet kaptak (általában reggeli feketekávé és esti híg marharépaleves). A legnagyobb ellenség azonban az őrök folyamatos fizikai bántalmazása és a betegségek (főleg tífusz, valamint a bolhák, tetvek) és a rendkívüli hideg voltak. A két helyszínen több tömegsírt is találtak (Hidegségben 790, Ilona-majorban 400 halottal) a háborút követően. A szerzők alapos kutatói munkával a helyszínen kerestek túlélőket, és a velük készített interjúk sorával egy pontosabb képet tudtak kialakítani a hidegségi munkaszolgálatosok körülményeit illetően. A visszaemlékezésekben a sok kegyetlenkedés mellett számos példát találunk arra is, hogy a helyi lakosság megosztott volt a foglyokkal szemben. Egy részük elhatárolódott tőlük, de voltak olyanok is, akik a legnagyobb veszéllyel dacolva is segítették őket.
