A „hegyeshalmi halálmars” néven ismertté vált esemény kezdete 1944. október 23. volt, ekkor indították a foglyokat az óbudai téglagyárból. A szerző bemutatja, hogy milyen embertelen körülmények között jutottak el a menetoszlop tagjai Hegyeshalomig, majd innen SS őrizet mellett a burgenlandi Zurányig. Innen vasúti kocsikon ismét visszakerültek Magyarországra, ahol a délkeleti fal (Südostwall) három erődítő táboraiba, Kópházára, Harkára és Ilonamajorra szállították őket. Kópházán november 20-tól mintegy 1300 főleg női fogoly kezdte el az erődítési munkálatokat. Továbbra is kevés élelemmel, a hideggel, a fagyhalál rémével, valamint az állandó fizikai erőszakkal kellett szembenézniük a foglyoknak. A szerző leírja, hogy a szokásos „hipis” (foglyok rendszeres kifosztása) mellett még jellegzetesen kópházi büntetési forma volt a jégverembe zárás, amit csak nagyon kevesen éltek túl. A Kópházán dolgoztatott női munkaszolgálatosokat 1944. december 18-án deportálták Lichtentwörthbe, helyüket férfi foglyok váltották. A hegyeshalmi halálmars másik csoportja, 1300 női fogoly Harkára került, ahol a kópházaihoz hasonló körülmények között kellett túlélniük. Itt a legelterjedtebb büntetési forma a botozás volt. Az itt dolgozó nőket december 12-én szállították át Lichtentwörthbe. Itt tovább folytatódott a foglyok kínzása, a szerző részletesen beszámol az egyéni és a kollektív büntetési formák alkalmazásáról, leírja, hogy milyen fertőző betegségek tizedelték a létszámot. A foglyok túlélésében nagy szerepet játszott, hogy a helyi lakosok, dacolva a veszéllyel, folyamatosan segítették őket.
