Die Journalistin Judith Brandner beschreibt in diesem Beitrag die Aktivitäten des Jüdischen Gemeindemuseums in Bratislava, dessen Direktor Maroš Borský auf der Grundlage von Dokumentenfunden im Slowakischen Nationalmuseum 2015 eine Ausstellung kuratiert hat, die dem Schicksal der ungarisch-jüdischen Zwangsarbeiter des Lagers Engerau nachgegangen ist. 2016 wurde diese Ausstellung im Dokumentationsarchiv des österreichischen Widerstandes in Wien gezeigt. Skizziert werden in dem Beitrag einzelne Schicksale von Gefangenen des Lagers Engerau, Fotos und Dokumente geben den Toten ein Gesicht und entreißen sie so der Vergessenheit.

Die Leiterin der Zentralen österreichischen Forschungsstelle Nachkriegsjustiz am DÖW Claudia Kuretsidis-Haider und der damalige Präsident der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde Bratislava Peter Salner behandeln in ihrem Aufsatz die Erinnerung an die Toten von Engerau aus österreichischer und slowakischer Sicht – eine Erinnerung, die jahrzehntelang getrennt voneinander in unterschiedlichen Ausformungen und in unterschiedlicher Intensität erfolgte. Erst seit den 2010er Jahren entstanden Ansätze der Herausbildung eines Gedächtnisortes über die Grenzen hinweg mit dem Ziel, die Opfer und die Schuld der Täter nicht vergessen zu lassen und gemeinsam Zeichen der Erinnerung zu setzen.

Der Schwerpunkte der Arbeit liegt auf der Geschichte des Lagers Engerau und ihre Einbettung in den größeren historischen Rahmen der Annexion Ungarns durch die Nationalsozialisten 1944 und den Südostwallbau.

Auf der Grundlage von mehr als 8.000 Seiten Gerichtsdokumenten stellt das Buch die Geschichte der sechs Engerau-Prozesse von 1945 bis 1954 sowie ihre Hintergründe ausführlich dar. Im Zentrum stehen dabei Fragen wie: In welcher Weise baut kann ein rechtsstaatliches Justizsystem in einem Land aufgebaut werden, in dem ein Völkermord stattgefunden hat? Wie führt man einen Prozess um Verbrechen, an denen weite Teile der Bevölkerung direkt oder indirekt beteiligt waren? Darüber hinaus steht aber auch das Schicksal der ungarisch-jüdischen Zwangsarbeiter, die zu Tausenden in den letzten Monaten der NS-Herrschaft entlang der heute österreichisch-ungarischen Grenze Sklavenarbeit bei den Schanzarbeiten im Zuge des Südostwallbaues leisten mussten, im Mittelpunkt.

2018 wurde beim Ungartor in Hainburg eine Gedenkstele für die Opfer des „Todesmarsches“ von Engerau nach Bad Deutsch-Altenburg sowie des Lagers Engerau errichtet. Zwischen Wolfsthal und Hainburg wurden im Juni 1945 zehn Leichen in einem Massengrab vorgefunden und im Auftrag der Staatsanwaltschaft Wien exhumiert.

Bereits unmittelbar nach dem Ende der NS-Herrschaft wurde auf dem Friedhof von Bad Deutsch-Altenburg ein „Kriegsgrab“ für 8 „unbekannte Israeliten“ errichtet. 2016 wurde der Grabstein erneuert und mit einer Grabplatte ergänzt, auf der die historischen Hintergründe für das Grab dargelegt sind. Hier bestattet sind sowohl Häftlinge des Lagers Engerau als auch des Lagers für ungarisch-jüdische Zwangsarbeiter des Lagers in Bruck/Leitha, das ebenfalls Ende März 1945 evakuiert wurde. Gemeinsam wurden die Häftlinge von Bad Deutsch-Altenburg auf Schiffen donauaufwärts nach Mauthausen gebracht.
